We begin by picking up our local guide, who will provide fascinating commentary throughout the day, sharing stories of dam construction, community impact, and natural beauty.

First stop is the breathtaking Avon Dam, Sydney’s second-largest. Completed in 1927, this 72-metre-high curved dam, built with massive sandstone blocks using cyclopean masonry, is a spectacular feat of 1920s engineering. Overlooking stunning reservoir views, your guide will explain the dam’s construction, its enduring role in water supply to the Illawarra, and its unique tunnel connection to Nepean Dam, completed in 1973.

Next, we visit the Nepean Dam, smaller in size but rich in history. Constructed between 1925 and 1935—with a two-year halt during the Great Depression—this dam has provided essential water to towns like Bargo, Thirlmere, Picton, and The Oaks for decades.

Throughout the day, enjoy panoramic dam views, scenic drives, and captivating local insights as your guide brings the region’s story to life—from monumental construction projects to the continued importance of these sites today.

After exploring the dams, we’ll stop for a hearty country-style lunch at the Tahmoor Inn—the ideal way to relax, refuel, and reflect on a day shaped by both water and history.
