Day One: Darwin

Day Two: Darwin
Join a city sights tour for the perfect introduction to Darwin, with expert commentary by a local guide. See the lush Botanic Gardens and the Chinese Temple, which was re-built after it was demolished by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Tour the historic sites of the city including the East Point Military Precinct. See the Stokes Hill Wharf area, the Mooring Basin and Darwin Aviation Museum. There is also time available to explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, whose collections encompass Aboriginal art, visual arts, and Northern Territory history and natural sciences. Day Three: To Katherine
Once you’re ready to hit the road, set off towards Litchfield National Park. The drive offers stunning scenery as you leave the city behind. Upon arriving at Litchfield, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the park. Start with a visit to the iconic Wangi Falls, where you can take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters. The surrounding bushland is perfect for a short hike, allowing you to soak in the tranquil environment. Next, explore Florence Falls, another spectacular spot in Litchfield. Here, you can take a short walk down to the plunge pool, surrounded by lush vegetation. The sound of cascading water and the vibrant flora provide an idyllic backdrop. As you continue your exploration, make sure to check out the magnetic termite mounds, a unique geological feature of the park. These impressive structures provide insight into the fascinating behaviour of the local termite species and are a great photo opportunity. After a day spent revelling in the beauty of Litchfield, it’s time to make your way to Katherine. The drive to Katherine will take you through some stunning outback landscapes, so keep your camera handy for any picturesque moments along the way. Tonight is at the Contour Hotel. Please note not to take any fruit with you on the journey tomorrow due to biosecurity. (B,L,D)

Day Four: To Kununurra
Continuing west, the next notable stop is Victoria River, one of the largest rivers in the Northern Territory. The region is known for its dramatic escarpments and stunning red cliffs, particularly around the Victoria River Crossing. This area is a great spot for fishing, with barramundi being a prized catch, and it also offers some beautiful short walks, like the Escarpment Walk, which provides breathtaking views over the river and surrounding ranges. The remote beauty of this region, with its rugged landscapes and abundant wildlife, gives travellers a true sense of the Australian Outback. Further along the road, you will reach the small town of Timber Creek, a popular stopover for those traveling to Western Australia. Timber Creek offers a peaceful break from the road. The town has historical significance, with the Gregory Tree, a large boab tree near the Victoria River that marks the campsite of explorer Augustus Gregory, who passed through the area in the 1850s. This site is an important piece of the region’s exploration history and offers insight into the challenges faced by early European explorers. As you travel further west, you will enter Gregory National Park, a vast area of rugged ranges, gorges, and river systems that showcases the natural beauty of the Northern Territory. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including rock wallabies, and offers several scenic walks. Crossing the border into Western Australia, the journey continues into the East Kimberley region, and the town of Kununurra marks your final destination. Before we get there we will have lunch at the Ord River Dam before joining a 2 hour fast cruise up the river to Kununurra where you will be welcomed at the Kimberley Grande Hotel for the next 2 nights. Day Five: To El Questro – Emma Gorge
Your journey from Kununurra to El Questro Emma Gorge promises a captivating experience filled with breathtaking landscapes and unique attractions. As you head out towards El Questro, take the scenic drive along the Great Northern Highway, where the rugged beauty of the Kimberley region unfolds before you. The changing landscapes are a feast for the eyes, with striking red cliffs and lush greenery. Arriving at El Questro Wilderness Park, the adventure truly begins. One of the highlights is a visit to the iconic Emma Gorge. The hike to the gorge is both invigorating and rewarding, with stunning views along the way. As you trek through the diverse landscape, keep an eye out for local wildlife and the unique flora that flourishes in this region. Upon reaching Emma Gorge, you’ll be greeted by the majestic waterfall cascading into a crystal-clear pool. Soak it all in before returning to Kununurra (B,L,D)

Day Six: To Fitzroy Crossing
Starting your day early from Kununurra, embark on a scenic drive towards Fitzroy Crossing, passing through the heart of the Kimberley region. Your first leg will take you along the Gibb River Road, offering breathtaking views of rugged landscapes, towering escarpments, and sprawling savannahs. You’ll then reach the Great Northern Highway, heading east towards Halls Creek. As you approach Halls Creek, take a short detour to visit the China Wall, a striking natural formation of white quartz that looks like an ancient man-made wall. Spend some time here taking photos and enjoying the unique scenery before continuing on your journey. Afterward, resume your drive towards Fitzroy Crossing. As you approach the Purnululu National Park turn-off, you’ll get distant views of the majestic Bungle Bungle Range. Tonight is at Fitzroy River Lodge (B,L,D)

Day Seven: To Broome
Embarking on a journey from Fitzroy Crossing to Broome offers an incredible experience filled with stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Start your adventure in Fitzroy Crossing, where you can explore the remarkable Geikie Gorge National Park. The gorge’s striking cliffs, shaped by the river over millennia, provide a breathtaking backdrop for photos and exploration. After soaking in the beauty of Geikie Gorge, make your way to the charming town of Derby. Here, visit the historic Derby Gaol, where you can learn about the region’s past and the indigenous history of the area. A stroll along the town’s jetty offers picturesque views of the tidal changes that shape the landscape. From Derby, it’s a 220 km drive to Broome, and the route is relatively straightforward. As you near Broome, the landscape changes, and the red earth gives way to coastal views. Your stay in Broome is at the Pinctada Hotel Broome for all the nights there. (B,L,D)

Day Eight: Broome
Start your Broome city tour by exploring the historic Chinatown district, known for its pearl boutiques, art galleries, and unique architecture. Visit the Broome Historical Museum to learn about the town’s rich pearling history, and then head to Town Beach to see the site of the famous Staircase to the Moon, a natural phenomenon visible during certain times of the year. Next, make your way to Willie Creek Pearl Farm, where you can take a guided tour to discover the fascinating process of pearling, see live oyster seeding, and learn how pearls are harvested. You can also enjoy a boat tour through the creek’s turquoise waters. From there, head to Gantheaume Point, a stunning coastal spot with red cliffs contrasting against the Indian Ocean. Here, you’ll find ancient dinosaur footprints preserved in the reef rock (visible at low tide) and enjoy breathtaking ocean views, particularly at sunset. Conclude your tour with a visit to Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral, known locally as the Shell Church. This small, charming church is decorated with mother-of-pearl shell and offers insight into Broome’s unique blend of cultures and its connection to the pearling industry. (B,D)
